Auditions

Iowa Brass Band Audition Policy (Approved on July 10, 2025)

1. Any musician is welcome to request an opportunity to sit in and experience an Iowa Brass rehearsal by contacting the Conductor, any full-time member, or through our website.

a. Any member who will share a part with the guest player must be notified and explained the intent (potential long-term member or one-time sub, etc.), prior to the guest showing up to that rehearsal.

2. When addressing personnel needs, the Principal Conductor will communicate with the Section Leader and may also consult other members of the band as appropriate to recruit new players both as permanent additions and temporary substitutes. Similarly, the Section Leader may initiate communication regarding the need for additional personnel.

3. Interested players may be invited to fill temporary vacancies for a rehearsal or concert by the Section Leader or another band member, in consultation with the Principal Conductor. When a full-time position is open and a prospective player is invited to participate on a trial basis, they will be informed in advance about the selection process by either the Principal Conductor, Section Leader, or another appointed member.

a. If a temporary player clearly meets the musical expectations of the Conductor, and in consultation with the Section Leader during rehearsals, the temporary player may be invited to full-time status without a formal audition.

4. After the trial period, if the Conductor feels an audition for the prospective member is needed, then the following procedure will be followed:

a. The audition panel will consist of the conductor, section leader, and they will appoint at least one other member.  In the event of a disagreement between the conductor and section leader, board involvement may be requested for resolution.

b. Auditions will not be blind.

c. Materials will be chosen and delivered to the candidate at least 2 weeks prior to the audition.

d. There is a short interview process at the end of the audition to ensure that the required rehearsal and performance expectations and commitment for a full-time member is understood.

5. Single candidates should be notified by the outcome of the audition within 48 hours of the audition as a best practice. Multiple candidates auditioning over a period of weeks will be notified of when the audition will close and when they can expect notification.

6. Outcome possibilities

a. Acceptance

b. Denial

c. Acceptance with trial period or re-audition. If this is the path, the candidate will re-audition based on a mutually agreed date from the audition committee (conductor, section leader, and at least one other member).
